With children we start on time, to avoid complex solutions later
Orthodontic care at an early age is an investment in the healthy development of a child's smile Did you know that caring for a healthy smile starts even before all the permanent teeth have come in? The first orthodontic examination in childhood can guide the emerging permanent teeth in the right direction, correct harmful habits and prevent future complications before they even appear.
This isn't just prevention, but an opportunity to make an informed decision that will spare our child painful corrections and lengthy treatment at a later stage, if they end up needing it.
When is the right time?
According to the American Association of Orthodontists, the first examination should be done around the age of 7, when the child has mixed dentition (baby and permanent teeth). In our practice we recommend this happen as early as between 5 and 7 years of age, when the incisors begin to change – a key stage in shaping the bite.
This, of course, is a guideline, not a limit. In certain cases it's good to have the consultation earlier – at signs of an incorrect bite, breathing problems or persistent harmful habits such as thumb-sucking or mouth-breathing.
What are the benefits of an early orthodontic assessment?
• Timely, gentle correction with minimal intervention
• Preventing more serious orthodontic problems in the teenage years
• Supporting proper development of the jaws and facial symmetry
• A positive effect on breathing, speech and self-confidence
• Building a good attitude toward caring for the smile
What does the first consultation include?
The first orthodontic consultation is completely painless and gentle. Here's what it includes at Dr Riahi's clinic:
• A detailed history – dental and medical history, harmful habits, family predisposition
• A clinical examination – a visual assessment of the bite, symmetry and jaw growth
• Tests if needed – 3D scanning or X-ray for deeper diagnostics
• A plan of action – monitoring, preventive appliances or early light correction
• Transparent information – what to expect, what visits are needed and when it's appropriate to begin treatment, if it's needed at all
Very often this first meeting serves not to start treatment, but to provide reassurance, clarity and strategic planning.
What's different about our approach?
We believe that orthodontic care in childhood should be both professional and mindful of the emotions and character of each child. At Sofien Riahi Dental Clinic we approach it with:
